Some people believe that unpaid community service should be compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is said that serving the mankind is a human’s topmost responsibility. Thus, educational institutions have an immense task of imbibing this value early on. Nonetheless, whether social service ought to become a mandatory part of the school curriculum is a debatable topic and I agree with it to a great extent.
It is an undeniable fact that the progress of a society depends on how much initiative its people take. A society lacking conscious and responsible volunteers is bound to stagnate. If the youth of the country supports social causes, the state can spend time and resources on better developmental activities, leading to overall growth. For an instance, if the school students can educate underprivileged children or engage in tree plantation drive in their area, it will be a great effort towards social emancipation. Moreover, the adults would also feel bound by their responsibilities, seeing the energetic and enlightened youth.
Apart from this, this is an ideal way to train young minds. With organized and safe opportunities to perform community tasks under the leadership of their teachers, these teenagers will also sharpen their skills. This will help them acquire invaluable experience for the future professional world. Additionally, they will not only develop respect for service but will also adopt compassion and empathy. For example, visiting an old age home and taking care of the elderly there would make them better individuals.
Last but not the least, if voluntary service becomes a compulsory part of schooling, both parents and children will undoubtedly take it seriously. Since it will have an influence on grades, everyone will participate in real work. This will set the path for everlasting development for the country as well as for the children.
To sum up, school authorities must initiate this healthy move. However, they need to balance it well with the curriculum.
