Is Having A Larger Population of Young Adults Beneficial for A Country?

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults compared with the number of older people.

Do the advantages of such situation outweigh the disadvantages?

In the current era, some regions have more proportion of younger people in relation to the older generation. This situation has greater merits than the demerits.

To commence with, there are many benefits when a nation has more young population. A larger working population is like an asset for the economy as it leads to greater income generation. This boosts economic growth. Also, this means greater support for the dependent population consisting of children and old age people as youth can provide physical, mental and economical support to them. Hence, more young people lead to greater development.

Furthermore, another advantage of having higher population of young adults is that they bring fresh talent and greater enthusiasm into the system. Moreover, out of them, many young and fresh graduates can be hired at lower pay scales, which helps in getting inexpensive manpower. Likewise, young people make healthy citizens, thus, governmental funds can be used for better developmental activities and plans than enhancing the medical facilities. Thereby, youth is an asset for any society.

Nonetheless, there are a few demerits of having a higher young population. Firstly, it might aggravate the problem of unemployment due to greater number of job seekers than the jobs being available. Similarly, young people are inexperienced and cannot compensate for the need for experienced and mature employees. Not just this, high youth population means faster growth in population further, putting pressure on the scarce resources. Therefore, the state must make arrangements in advance to tackle such a situation

To sum up, some countries which are able to control the death rates but fail to control the birth rates, will experience this scenario. Thus, these must prepare efficiently to take advantage of this.
