Nobody can deny the fact that old age brings with it mental and physical degeneration, posing a hindrance in acquiring any new skills. Thus, whether or not it is useful for elderly people to engage in new activities is a debatable issue. I will evaluate the pros and cons of the same in the following paragraphs.
On one hand, a group of individuals recommends old age people to continue learning new skills. They do so as it exposes them to new experiences and helps them rejuvenate. Furthermore, overcoming new challenges keeps them in high spirits. It also presents opportunities to socialize, adding to their happiness levels and curbing their feelings of loneliness. Additionally, this might even provide post-retirement earning opportunities to those who need it.
On the other hand, another set of people believe that it is too late for old people to set the path of new learning. These people find it difficult to grasp anything new, minimizing the learning outcomes. Besides this, rather than exerting themselves with the pressure to perform, they should utilize all opportunities to relax and enjoy.
In my perspective, learning is not restricted by age, and people of all ages, including the elderly, ought to try acquiring new skills to keep themselves abreast with the modern world and lead more purposeful lives. However, it should not be extremely challenging in contrast to their fading abilities. For instance, an old-age person being part of a hobby class would experience a better quality of life than someone who remains confined within the boundaries of the house. Nonetheless, it must not be at the cost of their comfort.
In conclusion, any society must be capable of presenting desired learning opportunities to elderly people post their retirement.
