Score 9 Bands in IELTS Reading!

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

In the IELTS exam, the Reading section is 60 minutes long with 3 sections. The Academic IELTS Test consists of 3 long passages whereas the General IELTS Test consists of 1 long passage and 4 short passages.

The students face multiple challenges in the reading section. A majority of them struggle to finish all the 40 questions in 60 minutes of time. Some find it boring as they do not have an interest in reading. Others have no habit of reading. Those, who do not have problem with time management, find it hard to have accuracy.

Though there is no alternate to regular practice, practicing the right way can fasten the progress. This blog will present some tips which can set the path for 9 band achievement.

1. The first step is to understand the format of the Reading Section and the type of passages and questions. The candidates should read the first few passages, without finding any answers, at a leisurely pace.

2. The learners should try to attain mastery in the first 2 sections first and later on practice for the third section.

3. For the initial 3-4 tests, they should target completion. Thus, they should allow themselves to take as much time as they need, rather than a strict 60 minutes window.

4. But after 3-4 tests, they MUST always practice with a timer.

5. Try saving 5 minutes from the section 1 and section 2. This will allow extra 5 minutes for section 3, which is generally of higher difficulty level.

6. The candidates should not try to read everything but they should learn to skim. They should learn to extract as much as possible from the passage by reading as less as possible.

7. After completing a test and checking the answers, it is of utmost importance to review the mistakes.

8. Academic IELTS students can start from General IELTS Reading Tests to build interest, habit and speed.

9. General IELTS students should try Academic IELTS Reading Tests to challenge themselves.

10. Do not leave any questions as there is no negative marking for wrong answers.

By implementing the above tips, students can definitely boost their scores. For greater assistance, do get in touch with the experts at Emjay Coaching.
