Why Do Offenders Commit More Crimes After Serving The First Punishment?

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Many offenders commit more crimes after serving the first punishment. Why is this happening and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?

Police records from the past decade confirm that criminals that have been apprehended during this period are, more often than not, repeat offenders.

Once a person is arrested for his first crime, that person is then no longer afraid of being arrested and going to jail. These repeat offenders feel that as long as they are able to come out of jail after conviction, they can then repeat the same cycle over and over. Crime is highly rewarding and these habitual offenders consider going to jail as being a small price to pay for the benefits gained out of committing these crimes. In fact, these criminals get further emboldened and keep on committing more heinous crimes than before and they continue to do so, till the time that they keep getting away with it by serving a disproportionate jail-time.

The solution to this problem may lie more in the psychological sphere rather than legal redressal system. Once the first crime is committed, at the society level, great care must be taken to ensure that the first-time offender is not tempted into returning to the same milieu that engendered the crime in the first place. Corrective steps should be taken so the convict is given a fair chance to integrate himself back into civil society so that, gradually, the temptation to follow a path of crimes disappears altogether.

This may be easier said than done, but the sheer number of people who can be saved from becoming hardened criminals, where they may face even fatal consequences, makes this effort worthwhile.
