Do Driverless Vehicles Have More Advantages Or Disadvantages?

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

In the future, all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

In the upcoming era, with advance technological innovations, a high percentage of modes of transport will have no human drivers. Rather commuters alone will be driven by artificial intelligence-controlled transport. In my perspective, there are more benefits and less limitations of such a development.

To commence with, the advocates of driverless vehicles claim for its multitude of benefits. First and foremost, they will add to the convenience of human life by providing people freedom from driving in traffic or in bad weather conditions. Moreover, this will enable them to effectively utilize their commute time as per their interest. For an instance, a business owner would appreciate this facility as he can spend the driving time for coordinating with clients or relaxing by accessing some audio books. This will be even more beneficial in case of long-distance road travel as there will be no driving related fatigue and much easier with technology-driven vehicles. Thereby, making these vehicles popular among all.

Besides this, some feel that this might reduce the crimes that happen while odd hours commuting, safeguarding esp., the women, children and old age people. Further, there will be greater law and order due to no traffic rules violations on the roads by these robots. Another merit that cannot be ignored is that this choice will be cost effective, more so in case of companies involved in the transportation of goods and employees as there will be no requirement to pay to the human drivers. Hence, AI driven automobiles have a great scope in these progressive times.

On the flipside, the critics believe that there are a few shortcomings of this trend. Firstly, too much dependence on technology might make humans bigger slaves of technology and lead to unemployment. Some also claim that it might lead to accidents as robots cannot make real-time judgements as humans. Also, some remote areas might not have the infrastructure for such transport. Apart from these few limitations, driverless vehicles would be a boon for all.

To recapitulate, while this new technology can have many benefits, the few repercussions can be serious. Hence, this should be introduced after meticulous planning and thought as per the land and the infrastructure there.
