Why are People opting for Seeking Medical Advice Online?

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Some people use technology to take advice for their medical problems rather than seeing a doctor.

Why is this so?

Is it a positive or a negative development?

In this modern era of technology, the literate class tremendously depends on the web for seeking all kinds of information. This applies to even health-related ailments they are facing, for which they prefer the internet over a medical practitioner.

To begin with, there are a multitude of factors responsible for the increased reliance on the web. The most basic reason behind this is the free-of-cost readily available information on the internet. Further, when people or anyone related to them suffers from any disease, they face this immediate urge to explore the causes, symptoms and treatments for that. The Internet provides them instant gratification by providing immediate and nearly accurate answers to their queries. Besides this, on the basis of that, sometimes, they can decide whether or not there is any need to consult the physician.

However, there are many pros and cons of the above trend. On one hand, by being more aware of one’s medical condition and the factors causing it, one can utilize enough preventative measures to bring relief. At the same time, some amount of research enables people to benefit more from the consultation from a medical professional.

On the flip side, there are fair chances of a person misinterpreting the information available. Further, there is no authenticity of the source, leading to erroneous conclusions. Besides this, self-medication might lead to fatal outcomes. Another factor that cannot be negated is the lack of trust towards the health care providers, which affects the effectiveness of the treatment and hence, delays recovery.

To recapitulate, taking benefit from the free resources and enhancing self-awareness is always useful, provided that people do not undermine the relevance of expert opinion.
